The Issues

Recreation in Polluted Waters

Sewer system pollution, industrial contamination, hardened shoreline edges, developed wetlands and narrowed tributary channels have all impacted the health of our waterway and ecological communities.

Despite these challenges, dragon boaters, outrigger canoeists, kayakers and anglers rely on our waterways for recreation and enjoyment throughout the year. To address this apparent paradox, GoFB advocates for the future environment our communities deserve while also informing current users about the health of the water.

Our initiatives

Save the Sound’s Unified Water Study

Since 2021, GoFB has tested water quality at 10 sites in Flushing Bay and Flushing Creek as part of Save the Sound’s Unified Water Study. The test involves a wide range of parameters—temperature, salinity (saltiness), turbidity (gunk in the water), dissolved oxygen and more—to provide an overall snapshot of the health of the water. These tests are consolidated into a two-year report, which grades each waterbody. GoFB uses these reports to advocate for improved sewer and stormwater management in our watershed.

Community Water Quality Testing Program

Since 2012, GOFB has collected water quality samples for the Citizens’ Water Quality Testing (CWQT) program, an initiative now managed by the Billion Oyster Project. A network of GoFB volunteers collect samples at 8 watershed sites and take them to Queens College to be tested for enterococcus, a sewage-indicating bacteria. The samples are integrated into a citywide database that informs water users about week-to-week water safety.
