Community CleanUps
Where’s all the trash coming from?
Let’s be real. Picking up trash along Flushing Bay will not fix the pollution problem. Most of the trash that coats Flushing Bay’s shore enters the bay through the nearby Combined Sewer Overflow pipe (CSO).
Addressing pollution coming from the city’s sewer system requires sustained advocacy, effective grey infrastructure and well-maintained green infrastructure (learn more here!) Addressing single-use plastic pollution requires complex, root-cause organizing campaigns (learn more with our friends at Beyond Plastics!). While these issues will not be solved in a clean up, they can be better understood at a clean up.
Why We Clean
GoFB partners with NYC Parks on Flushing Bay community cleanups in order to reveal the pollution problem and connect participants with solutions. At a GoFB x NYC Parks community clean up, participants experience the magnitude of the pollution problem first hand and what it feels like to begin to help fix it. Community clean ups can be meditative, fun and, at their best, life changing. We invite you to experience one for yourself!
